So I've just posted to the Caz and Dec Instagram page about the book, Mindset: How You Can Fulfil Your Potential. (Here is an Amazon link if you are interested, it’s not an affiliate link). https://www.amazon.co.uk/Mindset-Psychology-Carol-S-Dweck/dp/0345472322
It would be corny to say that this book changed my life. It would also be untrue, however it was through a life-changing accident that my own personality and approach to life that changed. I didn’t know it at the time but I had significantly shifted from a fixed-mindset to a (primarily) growth-mindset person.
Let’s get this out there straight away – I still move between both mindsets, everyone does.
But I work hard and live in a growth-mindset manner. Why is this important? Well for me I saw significant development of myself through adjusting my approach to life.
I have always loved sport. Spectating, participating and when able, competing too. In 2007 I moved back to London and decided I wanted to play club rugby again. In my main position (fly-half) you are seen as one of the main distributors of the balls. I could always kick very well, had a reasonably fast and accurate pass off my right-hand but couldn’t pass of my weak, left hand. This isn’t unusual but those at the top of the game can pass as well off their weak hand as their other. I always envied this. I always thought it was just something they were capable of, that I wasn’t. Playing in my youth I accepted that I could do one thing and not the other. But coming back to rugby I had a different outlook. I knew if others could learn to pass off both hands I could do too. It took me 3 weeks of practising!
Let me underline that point. I had played rugby from the age of 10 to 18. In 8 years of playing rugby at school I just accepted my lack of ability.
With a different mindset it took just a few weeks of practise to transform my capability.
Apply that principal to everything you do and you can imagine the impact and that is what I would love for others to understand. Adults have the book by Dr Carol Dweck where they can learn about the growth mindset. So I wrote a story to introduce children to the same thing 😊
PS In my next post I will confirm if it’s growth-mindset or growth mindset haha. Thanks for reading all.
